Fishing Victim?

Fishing is important. I use it for well-fed food and Fish Feasts for raids. It also makes me a little bit vulnerable. So I always fish in PvP gear in shadowform.

Most people give me a wide berth as a shadow priest, but there are always the occasional gankers. The other day, I was fishing in SB, and a hunter decided to come at me with his cat pet. Knee-jerk reaction is to attack the pet... but instead I went straight for the hunter.

I had to fend off two attackers, so shielding myself, I laid on the instant DoTs to the hunter, then used my fear to buy some time to Mind Blast and then Mind Flay. When he came at me again, I used Psychic Horror then laid on the dps again.

Downed him three times, then went back to fishing.

Dealing with gankers is all about movement and control. Get behind them if it's a matter of LoS, keep moving, and protect yourself. Crowd control is key. Also, it doesn't hurt to have ample resilience to lessen the chances of getting 2 shot. Sure, pvp gear may lower ur stats, but at least you will have more health and staying power to get u through the surprise attack.

Naxx25 - Shadow Priest for Instructor Razuvious (Military Quarter)

Instructor Razuvious is best with two priests. Now, I have tried it as both Holy and Shadow spec, and I must say that going shadow for this fight is a must.

The two priests mind soothe the students then mind control them. Having the mind control glyph also helps, but I find that the bonus to shadow also greatly decreases the chance you will lose your mind control. I have done this fight many times with great success as a shadow priest with dps gear. It seems my bonus to hit rating helps (or could be my imagination), but I have brought down Instructor with my dps gear faster than my holy gear.

I was once summoned into Instructor since I knew the fight and have done it successful many times in the past. However, it was bad timing and my dual specs were Holy and Discipline (I was doing a lot of arena at the time). I figure, I could go in and do it without my shadow spec. Bad idea. I could not hold the disciples for more than a few seconds. We wiped twice before I had to go respec and get summoned back in.

So make sure you are glyphed, geared (hit rating seems to be important..), and in shadow form. Here is the strategy in short form:
  1. Both priests mind soothe.
  2. Mark disciples, since each priest will be in charge of two.
  3. The two tanks will tank the disciples that are not MC'd, and they are assigned to these.
  4. One priest will be the first to Shield then Taunt the Instructor. The other will just merely attack. When Shield Wall is 5 seconds from expiring, the other priest will Shield and Taunt boss off. Deadly Boss Mods is a great addon for notifying you when your shield wall is gonna be up.
  5. When mind control is about to expire, walk your disciple toward the back (near the tanks) and release them for the tank to taunt and hold. You will then grab the other disciple you are assigned to and mind control them. The reason why we switch disciples is mind control has a period where the MC'd disciple cannot be mind controlled again.
  6. Rinse and Repeat.
Note that in 10-man Naxx, priests are not required to mind control. There are crystals to control 2 disciples. Only with 25-man there is no crystals and there are 4 disciples. Questions on this fight? Post a comment!

PvP Tip: Burn them down

I have had some success with PvP... though there are a few classes that are troublesome. One particular headache is resto druids. Healer vs Healer is tough, but here is my little secret: Burn Down The Tree. Mana Burn, to be specific. Same goes for paladins, without mana, they can't do much (I had a 70 paladin pre-WotLK). Whereas, if my mana is running low, I just bring out my Shadowfiend to help bring them down while regenerating mana.

Of course, if you are in an arena, the other team will figure out what you are doing and try to bring you down fast. It is important to have as much resilience as possible, and always have your shield up. People automatically head for the priest, so having a backup healer (preferably a pally) in your 5v5 team seemed to work the best for this tactic. Everyone is so busy trying to get to me, that they forget about our backup healer.

Helpful Healer (or DPS) Addons

I have many more favorite addons, but these all have special significance as a healer or dps. I can't list them all, but these are definitely my top picks that make life as a priest easier.

Here is a list of some of my favorite addons:
  • Healbot Continued
  • Deadly Boss Mods
  • Omen Threat
  • Recount
  • Outfitter
  • Gladius
  • Arkinventory
Healbot is a great way to see your entire raid and not have to worry about pulling people out by classes or group. I can also see debuffs at a glance, as well as mana. The mana is important, so I can make the most of Hymn of Hope. I also have my most used spells keyed to my mouse, so I can cast a variety of spells with just a click.

Deadly Boss Mods (aka DBM) is perhaps one of the most valuable addons for any serious raider. It notifies you about phases, special attacks, warnings, etc. There are several parts to this addons, and I get them all. It also has a nifty /range command that lets you know how far away you are from fellow raiders. This is particularly useful for fights like KT in Naxx and 002 in Ulduar during bombs. I find this particularly helpful for the Loatheb fight. I can time the aura to start my Prayer of Healing ahead of time.. so I can heal my group as well as pop a fast Circle of Healing, especially if group heals are not very strong.

Omen Threat Meter lets me see when I am about to pull aggro. Then I can scale my heals down and use Fade. If Fade is on cooldown, there is always Binding Heal.

Recount is more of a vanity thing... but lets me see where I stand in terms of heals compared to other healers (or if I'm in my shadow spec, dps). However, Recount is very situational. It is not precisely a measure of how good a raider you are. Melee will do better in dps for a fight that requires a lot of movement than ranged. Same goes for heals: a resto druid popping instant HoTs during a lot of movement will do better than say a shammy or paladin.

Outfitter I use to manage outfits. To be honest, I carry 4 sets of clothes (including what I'm wearing) with me at all times. And no, it's not just a girl thing (though it totally is!). I have outfits for PvP, DPS, Healing, and Fishing. The benefits of this is being able to change clothes as needed. If I'm out farming and I come across an alliance, I can easily switch to PvP. If I'm doing Naxx25, and I need to go Shadow spec, I have my DPS available. Sometimes I change head items (there is a nice pvp meta gem you can get in Wintergrasp)to reduce silence effects duration during raids. Outfitter just makes managing it all easier.

Gladius is a must for arenas. This way, I know what I'm facing and can prepare accordingly. I'll go more into pvp later, but this makes managing your opponents so much easier. You can target and focus faster, plus see their classes, mana, hp, and cast bar at a glance. Need to burn down that pally or druid? There you go...

ArkInventory is one of my favorite addons. It is almost purely for organization purposes, because I was just tired of looking for quest items, mats, reagents, flasks, and foods. Everything is organized by category, and I can do this for my bank as well. I also can pick up pots, elixirs, and flasks as needed.. as well as make sure I'm well stocked on well-fed foods. This is also a great way to organize my outfits!
